Restaurateur put Sister Bay on the map
By Myles Dannhausen Jr.
June 13, 2010
Al Johnson, the man who put Sister Bay on the map, has died. The restaurateur, WWII veteran, public servant, and grandfather to a village succumbed to complications from a pre- cancerous condition called Myelodysplastic Syndromes June 12 at age 84. The place with the goats on the roof
Seventeen years ago, I headed off for a summer in Door County, Wisconsin. My family had vacationed there about a half dozen times when I was young and I'd always imagined what it might be like to work and live there. I had a job lined up at a restaurant and a room in the house of an 80 year old woman who rented out the six rooms previously occupied by her children.... READ MORE

If you are interested in making a donation in Al’s honor, one option is the fund former employees have set up with the Door County Community Foundation. (The seed money was what was left over from the 2009 employee reunion party after expenses were covered.) It’s called the Axel Albert Johnson Memorial Fund, and is specifically designated to be used for educational purposes, an idea Al really liked when it was presented to him for his blessing. It is an endowed fund, so will exist in perpetuity, and a sub-fund which will be specifically for individual scholarships is also planned.
If you’re interested in making a contribution (tax deductible) to that fund, simply write your check payable to the Axel Albert Johnson Memorial Fund, and mail it to the Door County Community Foundation, 228 N. Third Avenue, Sturgeon Bay, WI, 54235.
Please let Mariah Goode know if you have any questions: P.O. Box 602, Baileys Harbor, WI, 54202. (920) 495-6630 (cell). (920) 839-2155 (home). mariahkgoode@gmail.com.
